What's the Air Made Of?

Every breath you take is this mix of gases:

Drag the sliders and watch how air makes different kinds of clouds!

Your real air is fetched from a free weather service (open-meteo) โ€” no account needed. If you're offline, this button politely gives up!

Why Doesn't the Air Float Away?

Earth's gravity pulls everything toward its center โ€” including all the air around us. The closer you are to Earth, the harder gravity tugs.

This means air at sea level is squeezed tight by all the air above it pushing down. That's why we call that pressure "sea-level pressure." As you go higher up, there's less air on top, so the pressure gets lower and lowerโ€ฆ

A balloon filled with air grows bigger as it rises in a rocket, because there's LESS pressure outside squeezing it! At high altitude, the same amount of air inside takes up MORE space!
